At Wharfe Tree Services, we provide professional stump grinding services for both domestic and commercial clients. After a tree has been removed, the remaining stump can be unsightly, hazardous and inconvenient. Removing it helps prevent regrowth, eliminates trip hazards and makes way for landscaping, building works or replanting. Many of our clients choose to replant following tree removal, and by grinding out the stump and preparing the area correctly, we can often facilitate replanting in the same location without delay.
Our specialist stump grinding machines reduce the remaining stump into fine woodchip. Where appropriate, this material is backfilled into the cavity and left to break down naturally as mulch — a cost-effective and environmentally responsible solution. If the area is to be replanted or re-turfed, we can excavate the grindings and backfill with high-quality topsoil to create a suitable growing medium.
Stumps and surface roots are typically ground to a minimum depth of 150mm below ground level. Deeper root systems are generally left to naturally decompose unless full removal is required for specific construction or landscaping purposes. We operate a range of stump grinders to suit all access conditions — from compact machines that pass through narrow garden gates (or even through a property where access is restricted) to larger tracked grinders capable of removing multiple large stumps quickly and efficiently.
In cases involving windblown trees or where complete root ball removal is necessary, we can utilise excavators to extract the stump entirely and regrade the area. This may include removing spoil from site and importing topsoil where required, leaving the ground level and ready for its next use.
Underground utilities are typically installed at least 150mm below ground level; however, we ask all clients to clearly identify or expose any known services before work begins.
All operatives at Wharfe Tree Services are fully trained in the safe operation and maintenance of stump grinding equipment. Work areas are securely cordoned off, and protective barriers are installed where necessary to safeguard members of the public and nearby property, including delicate features such as glass or decorative surfaces. Safety remains our priority on every project we undertake.
